HDR Images Of Boring Ordinary Scenes

Does creating HDR Images from boring scenes give HDR photography a bad reputation?

I see so many HDR images out there that were created with boring ordinary or even bad photos. If the HDR effect wasn’t added, which makes it somewhat interesting, the normal photo would be garbage.

Some people must think that the HDR effect makes any old photo look spectacular, so they don’t bother to learn how to take good photos. The HDR effect can make ordinary or even bad photos look kind of cool, but you should still strive for and make every effort to take quality photos.

My rule is if the scene is worthless as a normal photo, then I won’t try and make it into a HDR image just to see if the HDR effect will make it look somewhat cool. You should still look to find interesting scenes and angles and then take well composed photos.

HDR photography won’t make you a great photographer, you still need to learn how to take good photos, and then the HDR effect, if properly applied can enhance the photos.

Below is a photo I took yesterday of some hills in Switzerland and dark clouds above. The clouds looked cool so I thought I would take bracketed photos of the scene to show a comparison of a boring ordinary scene like this and how it is enhanced with the HDR effect.

As you can see in the two photos above, adding the HDR effect can make ordinary or even bad photos look kind of cool, but even the top HDR image is still boring and not what I would consider a good image. The clouds look dramatic but that is about the only interesting thing about the HDR image. Maybe a more interesting composition would be a vertical/portrait shot with more of the road in the foreground and then the hill in the background and some clouds. I don’t think I took a photo of the scene as a vertical shot, but I probably should have, with more editing it probably could have been an interesting photo, or I could have used it in a photomontage.

So what are your thoughts about this blog post? Have you seen some very ordinary scenes made into a HDR image? Please feel free to leave a message or share this post.
